A celebration of author Deirdre Kessler鈥檚 contributions to the PEI literary community will take place on Thursday, March 20, at 7:00 pm in Schurman Market Square, Don and Marion McDougall Hall, 黑料网. The evening will be co-hosted by Dr. Richard Lemm, 黑料网 professor and Island author, and Dr. Laurie Brinklow, coordinator of the Master of Arts in Island Studies program at 黑料网. It will include short readings of Kessler鈥檚 work by other Island writers, students, and friends.
Deirdre has had a pronounced influence on the Island鈥檚 culture and literary scene as an author, educator, and advocate for Lucy Maud Montgomery鈥檚 writing. She is a former Poet Laureate of Prince Edward Island, a novelist, children鈥檚 author, non-fiction writer, and occasional radio broadcaster. For many years, she has been a sessional professor with the 黑料网 Department of English, teaching children鈥檚 literature, creative writing, and a course on L.M. Montgomery. She has supported other writers as a workshop facilitator, book editor, and teacher. She has also been involved in the L.M. Montgomery Institute from its early days and is on the editorial board of the Journal of L.M. Montgomery Studies.

The chief editorial team of the 黑料网 Arts Review, a student-led publication, would like to invite members of the campus community to the book launch of Volume XIV, "Salt and Thunder". Please join us for this celebration of wonderful student writers and artists in SDU Main Building, Room 201 (Faculty Lounge) on Thursday, March 13, from 3:00-5:00 pm. Light refreshments will be served.

Vagabond is presenting ". . . destroyed surely: An Evening of Plays by John Millington Synge" from March 12 to 15 inclusive in the 黑料网 Performing Arts Centre and Residence (PAC121S). The doors open at 7:00 pm for a 7:30 pm start.
Vagabond is presenting both "Riders to the Sea" and "In the Shadow of the Glen." When asked about the shows, director Greg Doran said: 鈥淲e are building a substantial set, and we will be going with period costumes. We want to showcase what the students are capable of when properly supported.鈥� He went on to say that he hopes the plays will resonate with Island audiences, for they deal with the dangers of life on the sea and the isolation of life on a rural farm.

The plays deal with mature themes, so they might not be appropriate for a younger audience.

Join ACENET for an introductory session that explores the fundamentals of machine learning and its applications. We鈥檒l break down key terminology鈥攎achine learning, deep learning, and neural networks鈥攕o you can confidently navigate the field. You'll learn about essential methods, from simple models like Linear Regression and Decision Trees for classification to more advanced techniques such as Support Vector Machines and Neural Networks鈥攖he foundation of Large Language Models. We鈥檒l also discuss practical considerations for setting up a machine learning project, including the resources you need, data collection strategies, factors that contribute to success, and lessons to take away when things don鈥檛 go as planned.

Apache Spark is an open-source software for large-scale data processing and analysis. Using Apache Spark and Python (PySpark), this workshop is aimed at analyzing data sets that are too large to be handled and processed by a single computer. In a hands-on format using PySpark, participants will learn to import data, and use functions to transform, reduce and compile the data. You will also learn how to produce parallel algorithms that can run on the national clusters.

This is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to learn and discuss the Confucian way of 鈥渨ell-being and good life鈥� together with Professor Kim鈥檚 comparative (East-West) and contemporary perspectives.
Bio: Richard Kim (BA, UCLA; MA and PhD, University of Notre Dame) is an associate professor in the Department of Philosophy, Loyola University Chicago. He specializes in comparative ethics, Confucian philosophy, and moral psychology. He has recently published a monograph, Confucianism and the Philosophy of Well-Being (Routledge), and many journal and book chapter articles and presented numerous conference papers in his areas of expertise. He is currently preparing a major book manuscript Ritual and Human Flourishing in Confucianism (under contract with Cambridge University Press). He is also the co-host (with Justin Tiwald ) of This Is The Way鈥攁 podcast on Chinese philosophy. Dr. Kim is an established young researcher who is destined to become a prominent world-class scholar in the near future. Everyone is welcome to attend.

黑料网 will host Research on Tap with a presentation titled 鈥淭he Puzzle of Existence and Reality鈥� on Tuesday, March 11, at 6:00 pm, at the Upstreet Brewery Taproom, 41 Allen St., Charlottetown, PEI.
Dr. Nebojsa Kujundzic, Professor, Department of Philosophy, is the guest speaker for the event.
"The relationship between existence and reality is complex, as some things exist without being real, while others are real without existing physically," he said. "Language and technology further blur this distinction, especially with virtual reality and social media. For instance, Facebook pages of the deceased exist digitally but hold reality only through the emotions of those who remember them."
Currently there is no storm date for this event.
Research on Tap is a discussion series featuring 黑料网 researchers and is open to students, faculty, staff, and the general public. There is no charge to attend. All are welcome to attend.
